John Richards

Web Site       U.S.A

Hello, please allow me to tell you a bit about myself. My name is John Richards, Jr. but most call me by my nickname, "Skeets." I was born in Adams, Ma., on February 3, 1947 and attended public schools there, graduating from the former Adams Memorial High School in 1965. I received a B.A. in Physics and an M.A. in Education from North Adams State College, now named the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. I have been married to Barbara Richards since 1969 and have a daughter named Carolyn. My wife and I reside in Williamstown, Ma. and have done so since 1972. I was a Physics Teacher at Drury High School in North Adams, Ma. for 35 years and officially retired on June 30, 2004, although I'd rather the term "unemployed" be used since I can now devote more time to my oil painting! This web site originated because many people have given me complimentary comments about my paintings; I thought I would share them with the rest of the world. Besides the art world, my hobbies have included fishing, hunting, playing organized sports, billiards, Enduro motorcycle riding, photography, raising tropical fish, archery, fly tying, swimming, model trains, throwing darts, bowling, golfing, playing the banjo, guitar, and bass (bluegrass style!), playing chess, playing poker, gardening, and my most recent passion, bonsai. My interest in painting was perked by Bill Alexander, a television how-to painter who made painting in oils look so easy. At that point, in the early 1980's, I decided to give it a try, even though I felt that I had no artistic talent. After much trial and error, I am beginning to feel somewhat comfortable with my work and hope to improve steadily.

I am basically a self-taught fine artist and have sketched and painted most of my life in oil, water-color and acrylic. In 1983-84, I attended the Alberta College of Art. On completion of this formal training I was encouraged by my friends and colleagues to focus on creative fine art and painting. I was juried into active membership with the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1985. Much of my subject matter comes from my Alberta hiking experiences in the Rockies, Horse-shoe Canyon, Drumheller river valleys as well as from British Columbia in the Kootenay ranges, Gallaghers canyon and Mission creek valley, coupled with countless excursions down the rural roads of the Okanagan valley. I am also able to draw upon my experiences with the quaint subject material derived from my early New Orleans life.

I exhibited in many group shows, held numerous one-artist shows in the past 20 years, and sold some of my work internationally. You may have seen my work at the Muttart Gallery, Leighton Centre, Western Canada Place, Peters Gallery and Heritage Gallery, all in Calgary, Alberta, and the Barn Gallery in Oyama, British Columbia.

Teaching was my next endeavour in order to share with others the joy and gratification of creating one's own interaction with landscape, mountainscape, seascape, flowers, still-life and other fine art subjects. I still work with equal comfort with water-color, acrylic or oil.
